Born to a Protestant family at their château at Rosny, Maximilien de Béthune, baron de Rosny, duke de Sully was a childhood friend of king henry iv. A trusted adviser, his talents were first used as a military engineer (he was wounded at the Battle of Ivry), then he was put in charge of royal finances (1598) and remained in complete control of the royal funds until the king's death (1610). Among his economic achievements was the successful reorganization of the national system of taxes and revenues. His rigorous policies allowed the reestablishment of an economic equilibrium as he reformed the system of taxes, tolls, and duties. He instituted policies in favor of trade and agriculture (encouraging the work of olivier de serres) and abolished many ordinances that hindered production in those areas. He retired after the death of Henri IV but continued to support the Crown, encouraging his coreligionists to give their loyalty to King louis x III. The duke de Sully left his memoirs, Économie royale (1638-62).
